NORTH TARTAN LARSON 62, 43 HOOPS OLSON 31

In the last game from Friday night it was again two teams I had not seen so far this year and it was another North Tartan team--this time Larson. NTL eventually caught fire with their bigger, powerful lineup. The fact was the three guards (Shakila Boler, Suriya McGuire, and Jennifer Dowd) had 32 of the 61 NTL points.

NTL did finish with the highest pp100 in any of the three games on Friday, but it didn't start out that way. 43HO scored first with an Angela Tauer shot from the left wing. NTL started off 1/6 and trailed 8-7. At the nine minute mark NTL led 14-8, but the next nine minutes NTL outscored 43HO 21-10. NTL kicked off a 7/8 offensive sequence with a pair of free throws by Katie Loberg. At half time it was 35-18. Amanda Zimmerman had 7 first half points for NTL.

In the second half 43HO was dry for the opening 12 possessions. NTL added 10 more points to their totals and led 45-18. NTL had a six possession scoring string later in the half with Boler scoring six straight points. NTL finished with a 62-31 double up win.

Taylor Young is out with mono, and Chelsea Poppens had high school events for NTL. Molly (not Hannah) Steele was missing for 43HO.

This turned out to be the most competitive game on Friday night. In a battle that went back and forth it was North Tartan Crosby edging MN Stars DeWitt 51-48. I had not seen either team yet this year, so it was a must see contest.

NTC scored on their first four possessions to go up 7-2. But a problem that would recur most of the night had already made its presence felt. NTC was only 11/21 for the night, less than 50%. And to start the game they were at 50% (2/4). MSD went up 19-11 on a 17-4 run. Europe Guy had 6 in that outburst for MSD. NTC had their own 11-0 run, with two 3s by Bree Holleman, to go up 22-19. By the half the game was knotted up again at 30. Holleman had 10 at half while Gina Lange had 9 for MSD.

Guy opened the second half with five points and MSD led 35-30. Neither team was ripping the nets up as NTC had a 7 possession drought, while MSD had a 6 possession drought with a 1/11 offensive sequence. NTC snapped out of their funk quicker to tie it up at 40. All in all MSD had a 3/20 offensive sequence, and all the points were at the line. That is a pp100 of 15 pp100. NTC surged forward with a 7-1 run keyed by an old fashioned three point play by Devyn Smith. On the next NTC possession she picked up an assist as Kaiya Sygulla scored. MSD wasn't finished yet. Abby Weiss nailed a three to cut the margin to 47-44 with about 3 minutes left. Kendra Harris made one free throw on the next NTC chance to make it 48-44. Lange made the first free throw, and missed the second with 1:40 to go. Lange got her own rebound and eventually as the ball worked around she missed a shot. The score was 48-45. Janae Burich added one of two free throws for NTC. MSD had three cracks at scoring on the next possession. NTC had two straight possessions where they missed a pair of free throws. In fact the missed free throw sequence was five straight. Weiss made a 3 with 14.3 seconds to go to cut the margin to 49-48. Smith made two free throws for the final margin. Samantha Robinson-Ricks' 3 missed the mark and Burich grabbed the rebound to preserve the win.

This is the first of 12 Out & Abouts from this past weekend's Minnesota State girls Basketball AAU tournament. Due to the volume of games, there will be some streamlining. You will get all the numbers of course.

FURY 65, SUNS 54

Pool G had three teams that were fairly even and this game tipped off the action on Friday night at 6 pm. The Suns jumped out early with a 6-0 run as the Fury was went six trips without scoring. Tiffany Van Haaften broke the ice for the Fury with a 3. The Fury took their first lead at 14-13 on a basket by Lisa Springer. The Fury's biggest lead came at 18-15 in the first half. The Suns rose up and went in front on a coast to coast pull up jumper by Pam January. The Suns held the Fury scoreless for another six possession stretch and led 25-20. Just as the Fury can be cold, the Fury can be hot. They had a seven straight possession scoring binge and finished the half with a 16-4 run to lead 36-29 at the break. Van Haaften had 6 in that outburst. The Fury bench provided 26 of the 36 points in the first half. Van Haaften and Keely Brennan each had 9 for the Fury at half time. Leading both teams was Hannah Hylla of the Suns with 10.

The Suns started out the second half with a four possession drought. Combined with the tail end of the first half it was a nine trip drought. The Suns cut the margin to 40-35, but the offensive performance again was lacking for six trips, only two of which ended in turnovers. The Fury went up 46-37 in the meantime. The Fury had a 57-43 lead with about 7 minutes to go. However over the next three minutes they only were able to make one free throw over nine possessions. With 2:08 to go the Suns cut the lead to 58-48. That margin held up with free throw predominating at the end.

As it turned out the Fury ended up as the 8th seed. MN Stars Smith won the pool.

MIA for the Suns were a couple of players off at prom: Jamie Noonan and Rhodeshia Robinson who came to the game in full regalia. Kylie Gottsman arrived late due to a high school softball game. For the Fury Sarah Peterson, and Kate Constable were missing.

The Viking clubs two premier teams met in the finals. They split the squad this year with former teammates now rivals. Last year it was the 6-6 twin towers playing on the 15u team. This year Nicole Griffin stayed with Coach Samuels and Anna Cole moved on to Coach Doucette's team. This match up again hinged on the TWSS defense as Samuels bested Doucette 65-40.

Samuels jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first three possessions while the TWSS defense held TWSD scoreless for their first four chances. Free throws, which Samuels had a big advantage at the end, played a part in the opening scores. Nicole Griffin scored an &1 while Laura Petersen, who ended up being the high scorer for both teams, made two free throws. Doucette answered the call early with six straight with Anna Cole contributing four. After that she did not score again, and only had two more possessions. Samuels had a rare five possession drought during this period. Doucette also had a five possession drought. Samuels outscored Doucette 20-7 the last half of the first half. A more severe 10 possession drought damaged any hopes of staying close to Samuels. Four of those possessions ended up as turnovers. By half Samuels led 34-15. Sam Hoyt led a balanced Samuels attack with 8 at the break.

Doucette managed to cut the margin down to 14 early in the second half, but that was as close as they would get. Samuels had a nine possession scoring sequence later in the half cementing the win. In that stretch TWSS outscored their close rivals 21-5 to make it 64-33. At that point Doucette's team was rushing their offense, taking quick shots trying to get back into the contest. TWSS, when they had the ball, took the shot they wanted when they wanted. The last 3:43 of the game Doucette's team outscored the champs 7-1. But it hardly seemed to make a dent.

After the game you look at the box score and go how did this happen? Petersen is aggressive to the glass, she went to the line three times and was perfect 6/6. She can hit a three, and she moves well without the ball. Add in the four assists and she had a 23 point impact on the contest.
Nicole Griffin, Milw Vincent 6, 5, 120.0, .600 It was good to see her go against someone her own height. She didn't back down. Griffin is an impact player just by being on the floor. She jumps and got on the floor after loose balls a couple of times. When a 6-6 kid does that and gets the ball it is noted.

Heather Kessler, Antigo 6, 8, 75.0, .375 is a lanky 6-1 player that also had five assists. another that works in Griffin's shadows. Kessler is more active than the LaCrosse Tournament held earlier in April.. needs to keep her hand up on her follow through instead of yanking it back light she has burned her hand on the stove.

Laura Petersen made as many free throws as TWSD did.
I think one key difference is the fact that 8 Samuels players picked up assists while only four did for Doucette. The one extra pass paid huge dividends for Samuels.

Team Wisconsin Select Samuels held Viking Club Boese to three two point field goals in the entire game in a 32 point win in the semifinals.

The way the game started however you wouldn't think the game was going to be a romp. TWSS started the contest off with a lay up off the tip. VCB answered with a three from Katelyn Mueller. Both teams scored on their first two possessions. Both of VCB's were 3s. That meant VCB scored 25% of their points in the first two possessions. Points were hard to come by inside the three point line and almost next to impossible in the paint as 6-6 Nicole Griffin rejected and intimidated VCB from attempting any shots. VCB had a drought of 11 after the initial flurry of 3s. VCB soon added another 8 drought to the total and closed with a 10 possession dry spell. Add it up and it was 2/31 sequence in the first half for a bone chilling .065 floor %, and 12.9 pp100. At half time it was VCSS up 30-10. Griffin had 7 points at half.

The outcome was not in doubt in the second half. TWSS held VCB scoreless for 9 straight possessions. It was the size, speed and aggressiveness that carried the day for TWSS.

Team Wisconsin Select got off to a torrid start leading 26-7 en route to a 60-34 victory in the Wisconsin AAU State championships over WBA Prestige.

Erin Frase started off with two 3s in the first three possessions to jump start TWS. She soon added another 3 that kicked off an eight straight scoring sequence and a 18-3 run. Prestige had no fire extinguisher for the blazing hot TWS. Prestige had a six possession drought during the same time. Prestige took a time out at 22-7, but it didn't change the course of the game. TWS cooled off in the later half of the first frame. Prestige actually outscored TWS 12-5 to finish the half. TWS had to burn a time out at 29-17 after a three point steal lay up and foul by Ashley Green. It was 31-19 TWS at the break.

The second half saw more of the same. There was one two minute sequence that electrified the fans. TWS was up 41-25 when Jessica Waldvogel (a gbbrecruit newcomer of the week) came off the bench for the first time. She immediately paid dividends with her denial defense and passing. She also scored too. Then it was back to the bench. When she was on the floor TWS upped its total with a 10-0 run to make it 51-25. As the 16 or Junior Eligible championship was on the other court we left the game with the score 57-30. TWS took the title 60-34.

This was considered an upset by the people in the know in Menomonie. Both teams had Wisconsin and Select in their name. Team WS had more bodies, and stronger bodies throughout. W Hoops S only had one reserve. It was however the smallest player on the floor that packed the biggest punch. Cady Roedl, the smallest, lightest player on the floor, provided a whopping 18 points for the winners.

TWS opened with a 5-0 lead as WHS started with a six possession drought. TWS led 10-4 with five different players contributing to the lead. TWS then fell into a 1/8 offensive sequence. That opened the door for a 9-2 run for WHS. Erika Chitko scored four straight points for WHS gave them the lead for the rest of the half. This was in the middle of a 5/7 offensive sequence for Hoops. It was 19-17 WHS at the half.

Roedl started the half with a steal and then a hesitation move for a basket. Taylor Lorbiecki added an old fashioned three point play later to give WHS a five point lead. WHS pushed that lead out to 30-23 after a transition basket by Roedl. This is when TWS mounted their comeback. Three minutes later the game was narrowed to 33-31. Just at that critical juncture TWS froze up on offense for six possessions. Alyssa Colla was called for a carry for the second time and fans were signified their displeasure with comments from the stands. The refs were not pleased and asked for those fans removal. The game was stopped as the parent/fans were ousted. TWS had a 4/5 string to tie the game up at 40. Cassie Hallstrand had four points to open up the TWS 9-5 run. Abby Weidman also knocked down a three for TWS. Jenni Gust tied it up with two free throws with 28.4 seconds left and the momentum clearly shifting to TWS. There was a turnover on the next WHS possession. Shelby Sterba picked up the steal. WHS had fouls to give and oddly three times they inbounded the were fouled and TWS was moving further away from their basket as they were trying to get the ball in play. On the fourth attempt to get the ball in the littlest player stole the ball and got it to Julia Shelbourn who was fouled with 7.5 seconds left. She made the second free throw for the final margin.

MINNESOTA FINISHERS 36, TOTINO-GRACE 28

With AAU off this week in Minnesota, the action shifted over to the MYAS side. Forest Lake hosted the 17u division today with four teams involved. I caught the MN Finishers vs Totino-Grace this morning. The Finishers are a multi-school team; TG is exclusively from the AAA State champs. Only one player saw extensive time for TG this year. Between both teams there was only one substitute. The Finishers overcame an early seven point deficit to beat Totino-Grace 36-28.

Kaeli Kraska of TG struck first with a 3. She was really the only effective weapon TG had as she racked up 22 of the 28 points (.786 of the TG points). On the next possession Britta Syverson scored on a second chancer for the Finishers. Points were hard to come by as both teams turned the ball over a whopping 36 times. Actually the Finishers had more turnovers (23-13) despite the victory. TG led 12-5 after a lay up by Kraska. TG went stone cold from the floor with only four more points in the first half, all by Kraska at the line, as the Finishers finished with a 12-4 run. TG finished the half with a 2/13 sequence (30.8 pp100, .154 floor %). MF took the lead for good on a drive by Laura Maltby 15-14. It was 17-16 MF at the break.

The icy TG attack continued in the second half as they started with a 1/12 sequence or 3/25 overall. MF broke free with a trey by Sonya Farrell followed by a Maltby shot in the lane, sandwiched by another Farrell three. That made the score 25-18 MF. TG managed to cut the margin down to 30-24 after the third 3 by Kraska, but they were only able to get two more points the last six minutes. MF didn't singe the nets either closing with a 3/16 offensive performance (.188 floor %).

TG only had numbers on one side of the jerseys in a minor annoyance.

In the early game it was Triple Threat beating MN Dynamite 47-40 reversing a loss in the Park Center Championship.

FURY HAUGEN 36, MIDTOWN LADY MONARCHS 27

Fury Haugen surprised many by taking the 14 championship beating Midtown Lady Monarchs 36-27. FH lost their first pool play game on Friday to the Suns 42-33, but then won the rest of their contests during the tournament. They beat the Jazz in the pool play 50-34 and then in the quarterfinals beat Metro Stars 49-43, and took MN Stars Collins 50-30 in the semis. MLM dodged Fury Livers in the quarters 51-50, then edged MN Stars Hested 50-47 in the semis.

As a spoiler alert I coached Erica Haugen back in the day at Osseo. One of my offensive mantra's back then was lay ups, free throws or 3s. Fury Haugen looked for the 3 ball and used their man defense for the ingredients in their win. FH led early 9-3. Both teams, as you can tell by the score, weren't ripping it up in the pp100 department. Droughts, not severe, but persistent, hit both teams. MLM had a five possession drought during that sequence. MLM tied it at 12 and led 14-12 as 6-2 Bethany Doolittle scored on three straight possessions. It was FH's time for a five possession drought. Sophie Jaskulske answered on the next trip for FH and then scored two possessions later to give FH a lead they would not relinquish. FH led at the half 16-15.

FH scored three straight times early in the second half to go up 20-15. But it was the lack of scoring that struck next. MLM had a 1/12 offensive sequence, while FH had a 1/10 sequence. MLM closed to 23-21 with 7:24 left. A three by Amie Tunheim and then a put back on the next FH possession by Alicia Johnson put FH up 28-21. After Tori Rule answered for MLM the droughts struck both teams again. Both had fivers. Jaskulske broke the drought to give FH a 30-23 lead. That started a 4/6 offensive sequence for FH down the stretch to preserve the win.

NORTH TARTAN 61, METRO STARS 49

North Tartan put the Big Hirt on the Metro Stars with a 61-49 win in the championship game between these long time rivals. The difference maker in this game was 6-2 Kayla Hirt of Bemidji as she keyed a 11-2 run with 9 points at the start of the second half. NT trailed at half time 33-30.

Early on NT established a 19-9 lead after a Gabrielle Boever trey. Metro Stars scored on eight straight possessions to close the gap to 27-25. Rachel Leitz started it off with 9 straight points. Leitz tied it at 30 with a long range bomb and then Ellen Edison, with 2.2 seconds left made a three from mid court with a hand in her face for a 33-30 Metro Stars lead. Leitz had 13 points in the half.

Neither team had much luck to start the second half. MS was stone cold. They had a six possession drought to begin the half and it soon became a 1/14 offensive string. That is a 14.3 pp100 and a floor % of .071. NT got rolling with a drive by Ameshia Kearney. Then Kayla Hirt put the hurt on MS. She scored the next nine points including the best play of the tournament when she raced out to pick up a rebound near the free throw line, sprinted down court and went behind her back full speed as she blew by a defender. She scored the lay up and was fouled. She added the free throw. That made the score 41-35 NT. The game stayed in four point limbo until Hirt ignited another NT surge by scoring the first four points in another 11-2 run to make it 54-41. There was less than three minutes remaining and NT maintained that advantage.

Both teams had players out with injury. For NT Angela Christianson was out, and Brooke Brown was out for MS.

North Tartan is now the #1 seed in the 15 division. Oddly enough Metro Stars is #3.

In one of the 16 semis it was MN Stars Borowicz using their size and depth to zip by upset winner Metro Stars White 74-38. The defensive advantage for MSB kept MSW off balance. MSW only had five two point field goals on their initial half court offense. The two huge posts for MSB, Amber Dvorak and Cassie Rochel, combined for 30 points.

MSW scored on the opening tip with Lauren Wittman doing the honors. It was close up to 7-6 when MSB went on an 18-0 run to blow open the game 25-6. The twin towers started the run with 9 of the first 12 points. MSB had a 9/10 offensive sequence as everything was clicking. At half time it was 39-16. Rochel had 10 points by half.

The second half didn't move the score off that margin. In fact MSB added to their margin. The second half Dvorak caught fire with 14 points.

It was unfortunate that the championship was scheduled at the same time as the Miss Basketball banquet. NC Heat beat MSB 52-50 on a last second drive by Tayler Hill.

If you look at the floor % you notice she was 8/8 1.000. That does not mean she made every shot. It does mean that if she missed either she got the board and scored or someone else got the o board. Defensively her height intimidates. However she needs to be more aggressive on the D boards.

NC HEAT 75, MN STARS SMITH 45

Quarterfinals on Saturday had no drama (except in the Metro Stars Civil War). Each team was missing a few players due to prom or other events. The main ingredients were there for the Heat to wilt MN Stars Smith 75-45. MSS only scored five two point field goals the entire game in the half court action. They did have nine total, but four were scored in transition action. This is the third MN Stars team at the 16/junior eligible level I have seen.

NCH broke free from a 9-7 game with a 15-2 run that broke the game open. Thanks to their pressure defense NCH held MSS scoreless 10 straight possessions. NCH's potent offense didn't slow down later in the first half. They scored on 6/7 possessions to build a commanding 35-17 lead. It was 41-26 at half time. Megan Nipe had 9 for NCH at half.

It was more of the same in the second half. MSS had another 10 possession drought. Mandy Poke scored 11 of her points in the second half. Brittany Dyshaw added 9 in the second half for NCH. The game did not have a lot of energy toward the end with the contest pretty much decided.

Another quarterfinal game that did not hold drama in the final score. The drama came in the fact that it was a civil war game on two levels--all in the family. #1. It was a Stars family match up and #2. it was an Eckmann family match up. Daughter Rachelle Eckmann plays with MSB while father Tom coaches MSE.
As with most of the teams today both were hit by prom season and weather. Brittany Chambers and Leah Dietel were both gone at prom, while the post contingent for MSE either were at prom or snowed in (yes I said the S word).

MSE was competitive early as they led 13-12 after a Kellie Ring lay up. After that MSB outscored MSE 26-4 the last 9 minutes of the first half as MSB pulled away to a 38-17 half time lead. MSE had a 12 possession drought with 7 ending in turnovers.
