X Factor Wins

MYAS RESULTS
The X-Factor 17U team won the 17/19 MYAS tourney at Duluth East.

X Factor faced Barnum in pool play game one. XF led 24-12 at half time and won the game 42-27. 5-11 Megan Strese (Brandon-Evansville) and Hannah Rutten 6-1 (New York Mills) were able to contain Barnum's Meghan Myhre. Strese led the scoring with 14 points.

In pool play game two the X Factor got revenge from a St Cloud tourney loss to the Northern Lights by coasting to a 43-29 win after leading 20-12. The Lights were unable to get anything underneath against Strese, Rutten and Eagle Valleys 5-8 Missy Kassube and were left hoping the three ball would be enough, which it wasn't.
Strese 13, Sebeka's Betsy Olson had 11 and Kassube added 10.

On Sunday in the championship the X-Factor played a combo team of Brainerd and Crosby-Ironton. The Factor led 23-18 and then routed the Warriors by outscoring them in the second half 27-13 for a 50-31 win. Staples-Motley's Caitlyn Robinson played outstanding defense against the Warrior top gun Emily Theising, and the X-Factor pulled down almost every rebound on both ends of the floor. Strese led the scoring with 21.

Other X-Factor team members that received the gold medals were Brooke Simonson and Nikki Pearson (Staples-Motley) Brianna Salathe (Eagle Valley) Sarah VandenHuevel (Bertha-Hewitt).

Wisconsin State AAU Tournament Results

#2 posting 5.4.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

WISCONSIN STATE AAU TOURNAMENT RESULTS
Today it was off to Menomonie to see the Wisconsin State AAU tournament. The number of teams is lower than that of Iowa or Minnesota. There were only four teams in the 14u division, and 8 each in the 15u and Junior Eligible divisions.

The 14u championship provided the most drama by far of the day. Wisconsin Hoops Select out of the Madison upset Team Wisconsin Select 41-40. WHS only had six bodies as some girls were off to soccer. Despite not having legs WHS did build up a 7 point lead only to see TWS rally to tie the game at 40 each with 28.4 seconds left. TWS had the ball with 16 seconds left when Cady Roedl stole an inbounds pass and Julia Shelbourn was fouled. She made the second free throw and a desperation three bounced off as WHS escaped with a victory.

In the 15u championship it was Team WI Select beating WBA Prestige 60-34. TWS controlled the game early with eight straight scores to open up a 26-7 lead. It was 31-19 at half. In the second half TWS had another outburst with six straight scores to go up 53-25. We missed the last minute or two to catch the start of the 16u or junior eligible championship.

In the Junior Eligible semis it was Team Wisconsin Select Samuels beating Viking Club Boese 56-24 as the TWSS defense, led by 6-6 Nicole Griffin, prevented any easy shots. It was 30-10 at half time.

In the final TWSS matched up against Team Wisconsin Select Doucette. TWSD also has a 6-6 center in Anna Cole. Both Griffin and Cole were on the same team last year so there was a bit more intensity in this Civil War battle. TWSS jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first three possessions and never looked back. TWSD did close to 7-6, but after that Samuels went on a 27-9 run to close the half up 34-15. At the widest margin in the second half Samuels team led 64-33.

Out & About: MN Finishers/Totino-Grace

#2 posting 5.3.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

MINNESOTA FINISHERS 36, TOTINO-GRACE 28

With AAU off this week in Minnesota, the action shifted over to the MYAS side. Forest Lake hosted the 17u division today with four teams involved. I caught the MN Finishers vs Totino-Grace this morning. The Finishers are a multi-school team; TG is exclusively from the AAA State champs. Only one player saw extensive time for TG this year. Between both teams there was only one substitute. The Finishers overcame an early seven point deficit to beat Totino-Grace 36-28.

Kaeli Kraska of TG struck first with a 3. She was really the only effective weapon TG had as she racked up 22 of the 28 points (.786 of the TG points). On the next possession Britta Syverson scored on a second chancer for the Finishers. Points were hard to come by as both teams turned the ball over a whopping 36 times. Actually the Finishers had more turnovers (23-13) despite the victory. TG led 12-5 after a lay up by Kraska. TG went stone cold from the floor with only four more points in the first half, all by Kraska at the line, as the Finishers finished with a 12-4 run. TG finished the half with a 2/13 sequence (30.8 pp100, .154 floor %). MF took the lead for good on a drive by Laura Maltby 15-14. It was 17-16 MF at the break.

The icy TG attack continued in the second half as they started with a 1/12 sequence or 3/25 overall. MF broke free with a trey by Sonya Farrell followed by a Maltby shot in the lane, sandwiched by another Farrell three. That made the score 25-18 MF. TG managed to cut the margin down to 30-24 after the third 3 by Kraska, but they were only able to get two more points the last six minutes. MF didn't singe the nets either closing with a 3/16 offensive performance (.188 floor %).

TG only had numbers on one side of the jerseys in a minor annoyance.

In the early game it was Triple Threat beating MN Dynamite 47-40 reversing a loss in the Park Center Championship.

The Week That Was #5: Seeding Time

#4 posting 5.2.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

THE WEEK THAT WAS #5: SEEDING TIME
Last weekend was the first big Minnesota event of the spring calendar. Most of the top flight programs were there. There were a few stunners. There were a few nailbiters. There was also a few Civil War games.

In the big upset in the Junior Eligible division it was Metro Stars White getting revenge over Metro Stars Black 51-32 in a Civil War game. MSW went on to finish third.

The JE (or 16) championship went down to the wire with NC Heat prevailing over MN Stars Borowicz/Hested 52-50. North Tartan Larson and Crosby were both missing from this event, but will be there next weekend for the Minnesota State Tournament. The top three teams look solid, and North Tartan Crosby has yet to lose and may be a dark horse.

In the 15 division it was North Tartan beating Metro Stars for the title. NT had different players step up and deliver in each game. When they all fire on the same cylinder at the same time they will be scarry.

In the wide open 14s it was Fury Haugen turning heads with a win over Midtown Lady Monarchs. The 14 teams are bunched up and no one has a clear slam dunk advantage in the upcoming state tournament.

One team coach Teas & I saw over the weekend that played with great intensity and hustle didn't win, but we think that will change in the upcoming weeks as they get their system down. MN Stars Carlsile already has the working hard part down pat. Many times teams don't go all out. MSC does.

HANDS ON DEFENSE
The thing I noticed most this weekend was the position of the hands on defense. Most players insist on having their hands down by their knees. The better spot would be up by their ears, or having their elbows level with their shoulders. It makes the defense bigger, causes more deflections and makes it harder to see what is happening. I realize it is harder work, but those that want to stretch their game would be wise to get their hands by their ears.

THIS WEEK
The big event is in Menomonie with the Wisconsin State AAU tournament. Only 8 Junior Eligible teams will be in attendance.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
The 16/Junior Eligible winners NC Heat get the nod. When I watched them on Friday and Saturday they rolled over 43 Hoops Johnson and MN Stars Smith. Their margin of victory in those games was 43.5 points. NCH used their defense for many transition baskets. In each game they were over 100 pp100. They averaged 114.0 pp100 for the two games I saw and .551 floor %. On top of that their defense held their opponents to a 64.0 pp100 and .281 floor %. Unfortunately I was not able to see the finals.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Megan Nipe of NC Heat is always consistent. If you give her a split second opening, she will get her shot off. She has an uncanny radar. Her shot never strays away from the bottom of the net. She had the highest average in the two games I saw with 17 ppg. Her pp100 was 147.8 and her floor % was .696. Nipe always is ready to play and play well.

Remember the rules:
#1. I need to see the player
#2. Player needs to have 6+ possessions
#3. Player needs to be over 100 pp100
#4. Player needs to be over .500 floor %
#5. If I see a player in two games the numbers are added up and the average used.

FIRST TEAM
Brittany Chambers, MN Stars Borowicz (Jordan)
Amber Dvorak, MN Stars Borowicz (Hinckley-Finlayson)
Kayla Hirt, North Tartan 15 (Bemidji)
Ephesia Holmes, MN Stars 19 (Mpls South)
Megan Nipe, NC Heat (Centennial)
SECOND TEAM
Jade Geif, MN Suns Arbogast (Lakeville South)
Tayler Hill, NC Heat (Mpls South)
Rachel Leitz, Metro Stars 15 (Champlin Park)
Cara Lutes, MN Suns Arbogast (New Life)
Cassie Rochel, MN Stars Borowicz (Lakeville North)

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Her team didn't win the title this week, but Tori Rule of Midtown Lady Monarchs (and DeLaSalle) sure made it difficult for Fury Haugen to operate. She dominated the defensive boards. She has long limbs and is constantly on the prowl.

FIRST TEAM
Abby Busch, MN Stars Eckmann (GFW)
Rachelle Eckmann, MN Stars Borowicz (St. James)
Erica Gress, Metro Stars 15 (Apple Valley)
Tayler Hill, NC Heat (Mpls South)
Tori Rule, Midtown Lady Monarchs (DeLaSalle)

NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
With many of the players already seen during the course of three years the newcomers were few and far between. But there were a smattering of players that had escaped my gaze either during the winter seasons or during the summer circuit and camps. Alyssa Hagen of MN Stars Carlisle is one of several posts on that team that play with an intensity that doesn't quit. During the winter the 2010 grad plays with New Richland-Heartland-Ellendale-Geneva.

Out & About: Fury Haugen/Midtown Lady Monarchs

#3 posting 5.1.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

This game took place Sunday, April 27
MINNESOTA SEEDING TOURNAMENT
at Bloomington Kennedy
14 Championship
FURY HAUGEN 36, MIDTOWN LADY MONARCHS 27

Fury Haugen surprised many by taking the 14 championship beating Midtown Lady Monarchs 36-27. FH lost their first pool play game on Friday to the Suns 42-33, but then won the rest of their contests during the tournament. They beat the Jazz in the pool play 50-34 and then in the quarterfinals beat Metro Stars 49-43, and took MN Stars Collins 50-30 in the semis. MLM dodged Fury Livers in the quarters 51-50, then edged MN Stars Hested 50-47 in the semis.

As a spoiler alert I coached Erica Haugen back in the day at Osseo. One of my offensive mantra's back then was lay ups, free throws or 3s. Fury Haugen looked for the 3 ball and used their man defense for the ingredients in their win. FH led early 9-3. Both teams, as you can tell by the score, weren't ripping it up in the pp100 department. Droughts, not severe, but persistent, hit both teams. MLM had a five possession drought during that sequence. MLM tied it at 12 and led 14-12 as 6-2 Bethany Doolittle scored on three straight possessions. It was FH's time for a five possession drought. Sophie Jaskulske answered on the next trip for FH and then scored two possessions later to give FH a lead they would not relinquish. FH led at the half 16-15.

FH scored three straight times early in the second half to go up 20-15. But it was the lack of scoring that struck next. MLM had a 1/12 offensive sequence, while FH had a 1/10 sequence. MLM closed to 23-21 with 7:24 left. A three by Amie Tunheim and then a put back on the next FH possession by Alicia Johnson put FH up 28-21. After Tori Rule answered for MLM the droughts struck both teams again. Both had fivers. Jaskulske broke the drought to give FH a 30-23 lead. That started a 4/6 offensive sequence for FH down the stretch to preserve the win.

This game took place Sunday, April 27
MINNESOTA SEEDING TOURNAMENT
at Bloomington Kennedy
15 Championship
NORTH TARTAN 61, METRO STARS 49

North Tartan put the Big Hirt on the Metro Stars with a 61-49 win in the championship game between these long time rivals. The difference maker in this game was 6-2 Kayla Hirt of Bemidji as she keyed a 11-2 run with 9 points at the start of the second half. NT trailed at half time 33-30.

Early on NT established a 19-9 lead after a Gabrielle Boever trey. Metro Stars scored on eight straight possessions to close the gap to 27-25. Rachel Leitz started it off with 9 straight points. Leitz tied it at 30 with a long range bomb and then Ellen Edison, with 2.2 seconds left made a three from mid court with a hand in her face for a 33-30 Metro Stars lead. Leitz had 13 points in the half.

Neither team had much luck to start the second half. MS was stone cold. They had a six possession drought to begin the half and it soon became a 1/14 offensive string. That is a 14.3 pp100 and a floor % of .071. NT got rolling with a drive by Ameshia Kearney. Then Kayla Hirt put the hurt on MS. She scored the next nine points including the best play of the tournament when she raced out to pick up a rebound near the free throw line, sprinted down court and went behind her back full speed as she blew by a defender. She scored the lay up and was fouled. She added the free throw. That made the score 41-35 NT. The game stayed in four point limbo until Hirt ignited another NT surge by scoring the first four points in another 11-2 run to make it 54-41. There was less than three minutes remaining and NT maintained that advantage.

Both teams had players out with injury. For NT Angela Christianson was out, and Brooke Brown was out for MS.

North Tartan is now the #1 seed in the 15 division. Oddly enough Metro Stars is #3.

Out & About: MN Stars Borowicz/Metro Stars White

#6 posting 4.30.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

This game took place Sunday, April 27
MINNESOTA SEEDING TOURNAMENT
at Bloomington Kennedy
16 Semifinals
MN STARS BOROWICZ 74, METRO STARS WHITE 38

In one of the 16 semis it was MN Stars Borowicz using their size and depth to zip by upset winner Metro Stars White 74-38. The defensive advantage for MSB kept MSW off balance. MSW only had five two point field goals on their initial half court offense. The two huge posts for MSB, Amber Dvorak and Cassie Rochel, combined for 30 points.

MSW scored on the opening tip with Lauren Wittman doing the honors. It was close up to 7-6 when MSB went on an 18-0 run to blow open the game 25-6. The twin towers started the run with 9 of the first 12 points. MSB had a 9/10 offensive sequence as everything was clicking. At half time it was 39-16. Rochel had 10 points by half.

The second half didn't move the score off that margin. In fact MSB added to their margin. The second half Dvorak caught fire with 14 points.

It was unfortunate that the championship was scheduled at the same time as the Miss Basketball banquet. NC Heat beat MSB 52-50 on a last second drive by Tayler Hill.

MN STARS BOROWICZ
STARTERS
Theairra Taylor, St. Paul Central 9, 10, 90.0, .400 makes things look easy. glides. long limbs
Rachelle Eckmann, St. James 2, 5, 40.0, .200 a lunch bucket player doing the grunt work.
Brittany Chambers, Jordan 9, 7, 128.6, .571 point guard. The signature play of this game came when Chambers grabbed a d rebound and in the air cocked the ball behind her ear looking for any MSBer streaking down the floor. That is awareness squared. delivered the ball quickly.
Leah Dietel, Jordan 6, 4, 150.0, .750 steady big perimeter.
Cassie Rochel, Lakeville North 12, 10, 120.0, .700 runs like a deer at 6-4. Velcro for hands.
BENCH
Tyisha Smith, Mpls South 0, 4, 0.0, .000 speedy quick small guard.
Megan Waytashek, Centennial 2, 3, 66.7, .333 lanky perimeter
Kate Thompson, Wayzata 8, 6, 133.3, .667 perimeter with post height 6-2. Moves well and runs the floor also like a deer.
Amber Dvorak, Hinckley-Finlayson 18, 8, 225.0, 1.000 hard to move in the post. is making progress every time I watch her. offensively keeps ball high, has good hands. is learning to play at a higher tempo/speed. If you look at the floor % you notice she was 8/8 1.000. That does not mean she made every shot. It does mean that if she missed either she got the board and scored or someone else got the o board. Defensively her height intimidates. However she needs to be more aggressive on the D boards.
Hannah Linz, Eden Valley-Watkins 3, 2, 150.0, .500 3 point shooter. lefty. her passing is deceptive and quick.
Dani Mangen, Osseo 5, 3, 166.7, .667 small guard delivers big results.

METRO STARS WHITE
STARTERS
Lauren Wittman, Eden Prairie 4, 5, 80.0, .400 perimeter, lefty
Jen Field, Maple Grove 9, 11, 81.8, .364 point guard. made a couple of 3s. looks to drive
Bridget Schuneman, Centennial 6, 8, 75.0, .375 post player that was out sized inside. Still battled.
Julie Kruse, Maple Grove 6, 6, 100.0, .500 post. again out sized by twin towers
Jodi Batzel, Dover-Eyota 6, 9, 66.7, .333 scored all her points at the line. is in the tweener zone between 3 and 4.
BENCH

Hanna Iaizzo, White Bear Lake 0, 1, 0.0, .000 post
Karin Gibson, Eden Prairie 0, 9, 0.0, .000 guard. last weekend in Menomonie was stroking. today was ice cold. needs to work on ball handling/passing decisions and becoming more consistent with performance.
Laura Bruce, Hopkins 3, 8, 37.5, .250 perimeter. did score in transition, shot not dropping
Tess Komarek, Hopkins 0, 1, 0.0, .000 guard

your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

This game took place Saturday, April 26
MINNESOTA SEEDING TOURNAMENT
at Bloomington Kennedy
16 Quarterfinals
NC HEAT 75, MN STARS SMITH 45

Quarterfinals on Saturday had no drama (except in the Metro Stars Civil War). Each team was missing a few players due to prom or other events. The main ingredients were there for the Heat to wilt MN Stars Smith 75-45. MSS only scored five two point field goals the entire game in the half court action. They did have nine total, but four were scored in transition action. This is the third MN Stars team at the 16/junior eligible level I have seen.

NCH broke free from a 9-7 game with a 15-2 run that broke the game open. Thanks to their pressure defense NCH held MSS scoreless 10 straight possessions. NCH's potent offense didn't slow down later in the first half. They scored on 6/7 possessions to build a commanding 35-17 lead. It was 41-26 at half time. Megan Nipe had 9 for NCH at half.

It was more of the same in the second half. MSS had another 10 possession drought. Mandy Poke scored 11 of her points in the second half. Brittany Dyshaw added 9 in the second half for NCH. The game did not have a lot of energy toward the end with the contest pretty much decided.

No photos in this game.
