This game took place Sunday, April 27
MINNESOTA SEEDING TOURNAMENT
at Bloomington Kennedy
16 Semifinals
MN STARS BOROWICZ 74, METRO STARS WHITE 38

In one of the 16 semis it was MN Stars Borowicz using their size and depth to zip by upset winner Metro Stars White 74-38. The defensive advantage for MSB kept MSW off balance. MSW only had five two point field goals on their initial half court offense. The two huge posts for MSB, Amber Dvorak and Cassie Rochel, combined for 30 points.

MSW scored on the opening tip with Lauren Wittman doing the honors. It was close up to 7-6 when MSB went on an 18-0 run to blow open the game 25-6. The twin towers started the run with 9 of the first 12 points. MSB had a 9/10 offensive sequence as everything was clicking. At half time it was 39-16. Rochel had 10 points by half.

The second half didn't move the score off that margin. In fact MSB added to their margin. The second half Dvorak caught fire with 14 points.

It was unfortunate that the championship was scheduled at the same time as the Miss Basketball banquet. NC Heat beat MSB 52-50 on a last second drive by Tayler Hill.

MN STARS BOROWICZ
STARTERS
Theairra Taylor, St. Paul Central 9, 10, 90.0, .400 makes things look easy. glides. long limbs
Rachelle Eckmann, St. James 2, 5, 40.0, .200 a lunch bucket player doing the grunt work.
Brittany Chambers, Jordan 9, 7, 128.6, .571 point guard. The signature play of this game came when Chambers grabbed a d rebound and in the air cocked the ball behind her ear looking for any MSBer streaking down the floor. That is awareness squared. delivered the ball quickly.
Leah Dietel, Jordan 6, 4, 150.0, .750 steady big perimeter.
Cassie Rochel, Lakeville North 12, 10, 120.0, .700 runs like a deer at 6-4. Velcro for hands.
BENCH
Tyisha Smith, Mpls South 0, 4, 0.0, .000 speedy quick small guard.
Megan Waytashek, Centennial 2, 3, 66.7, .333 lanky perimeter
Kate Thompson, Wayzata 8, 6, 133.3, .667 perimeter with post height 6-2. Moves well and runs the floor also like a deer.
Amber Dvorak, Hinckley-Finlayson 18, 8, 225.0, 1.000 hard to move in the post. is making progress every time I watch her. offensively keeps ball high, has good hands. is learning to play at a higher tempo/speed. If you look at the floor % you notice she was 8/8 1.000. That does not mean she made every shot. It does mean that if she missed either she got the board and scored or someone else got the o board. Defensively her height intimidates. However she needs to be more aggressive on the D boards.
Hannah Linz, Eden Valley-Watkins 3, 2, 150.0, .500 3 point shooter. lefty. her passing is deceptive and quick.
Dani Mangen, Osseo 5, 3, 166.7, .667 small guard delivers big results.

Bridget Schuneman, Centennial 6, 8, 75.0, .375 post player that was out sized inside. Still battled.
Julie Kruse, Maple Grove 6, 6, 100.0, .500 post. again out sized by twin towers

Hanna Iaizzo, White Bear Lake 0, 1, 0.0, .000 post
Karin Gibson, Eden Prairie 0, 9, 0.0, .000 guard. last weekend in Menomonie was stroking. today was ice cold. needs to work on ball handling/passing decisions and becoming more consistent with performance.

This game took place Saturday, April 26
MINNESOTA SEEDING TOURNAMENT
at Bloomington Kennedy
16 Quarterfinals
NC HEAT 75, MN STARS SMITH 45

Quarterfinals on Saturday had no drama (except in the Metro Stars Civil War). Each team was missing a few players due to prom or other events. The main ingredients were there for the Heat to wilt MN Stars Smith 75-45. MSS only scored five two point field goals the entire game in the half court action. They did have nine total, but four were scored in transition action. This is the third MN Stars team at the 16/junior eligible level I have seen.

NCH broke free from a 9-7 game with a 15-2 run that broke the game open. Thanks to their pressure defense NCH held MSS scoreless 10 straight possessions. NCH's potent offense didn't slow down later in the first half. They scored on 6/7 possessions to build a commanding 35-17 lead. It was 41-26 at half time. Megan Nipe had 9 for NCH at half.

It was more of the same in the second half. MSS had another 10 possession drought. Mandy Poke scored 11 of her points in the second half. Brittany Dyshaw added 9 in the second half for NCH. The game did not have a lot of energy toward the end with the contest pretty much decided.

No photos in this game.

16 Quarterfinals
MN STARS BOROWICZ 66, MN STARS ECKMANN 38

Another quarterfinal game that did not hold drama in the final score. The drama came in the fact that it was a civil war game on two levels--all in the family. #1. It was a Stars family match up and #2. it was an Eckmann family match up. Daughter Rachelle Eckmann plays with MSB while father Tom coaches MSE.
As with most of the teams today both were hit by prom season and weather. Brittany Chambers and Leah Dietel were both gone at prom, while the post contingent for MSE either were at prom or snowed in (yes I said the S word).

MSE was competitive early as they led 13-12 after a Kellie Ring lay up. After that MSB outscored MSE 26-4 the last 9 minutes of the first half as MSB pulled away to a 38-17 half time lead. MSE had a 12 possession drought with 7 ending in turnovers.

This game took place Friday, April 25
MINNESOTA SEEDING TOURNAMENT
at Bloomington Kennedy
16 pool play
NC HEAT 72, 43 HOOPS JOHNSON 37

NC Heat jumped out to a 14-0 lead and held 43 Hoops Johnson to 14 scoreless possessions to start the game. The Heat had four players striking for eight points. 43HJ had one player above that metric.
The big factor in this game---NCH's defense and transition game. NCH had 30 points in transition.
These are going to be brief.... I need to get through four more tonight.

This game took place Friday, April 25
MINNESOTA SEEDING TOURNAMENT
at Bloomington Kennedy
15 pool play
MN SUNS ARBOGAST 50, MN STARS CARLISLE 42

In a reprise of the Stars vs Suns it was the Suns that prevailed this time in another rock 'em, sock 'em highly energized game. This time it was the 15s (2010s and 11s with a few 12s).

This game had many lead changes and intense action inside. The Suns led 6-3 early with Jade Geif providing four of the points. The Suns had a seven possession drought in which the Stars had an 8-2 run. The widest MSC lead came at 18-11 after a three by Kelly Stewart. The inside punch of Cara Lutes and Geif pushed the Suns back into the fray with six points to make it 20-17 Stars. The Suns completed the half with a three by Steph Davison that tied the game at 26.

The game was tied up four more times in the second half as neither team could shake the other. Early in the half droughts prevailed with the Suns going eights straight trips without scoring. The ball handling/passing decisions get a little tougher with increased defensive heat. The Stars had a couple of leads in the half, all one point. Kahla Becken scored in transition to give the Stars their last lead at 39-38. She had an &1 opportunity, but the free throw was missed. On the next Suns possession Erica Trabing made two free throws after getting an offensive rebound. The next Sun possession Davison scored to make it 42-39. Stewart knocked down another three to tie the game up at 42. The Suns finished the game with four straight scoring possessions, all eight points at the line.

This game took place on Friday, April 26
Minnesota Seeding Tournament
16 pool Play
MN STARS 19s 61, MN SUNS 16s 58

A short handed Minnesota Stars outlasted the Suns in a game that went right down to the wire. The Stars were All Stars last week, but they were missing the St. Paul Central contingent as they had a banquet. The game was delayed a bit because of the traffic congestion (luckily for us as we got in late too.)

The Suns rose first with a 7-0 lead. The Stars were still trying to get their feet as they rushed in from the outside world. The suffered through a six possession drought to begin the game. Once they got their legs, they ripped off five straight scores to trail 10-9. The first tie came at 16 and the Stars took their first lead at 19-16 on an Ephesia Holmes 3. The Stars then moved out to a 32-22 lead. It was a 16-6 run for the 2008 grads. Holmes had 7 in the run. Jamie Noonan scored twice at the end of the half to shave a point off the Stars lead 35-26. Holmes had 12 points at half time and Brianna Mastey chipped in 10 for the Stars.

The Stars duplicated their slow start in the second half with a 8-2 run for the Suns. Pam January had two straight scores as the Suns clawed their way back into the contest 37-34. The Stars eventually started scoring and pulled out to a 45-38 lead. The Suns tied it at 47 on a basket by Kylie Gottsman. That forced a Stars time out. After the time out there were 12 straight empty trips combined for both teams that lasted two minutes. It was the Stars that broke the tie with a basket by Emily Becken. Noonan tied it right up on the next trip with a put back. There were three more ties, the last coming at 58 after a January shot with about a minute to go. The Stars worked the ball around and Kiara Allums took advantage of a drive and hit the shot that proved to be the game winner. Allums then forced the steal in the next possession and Brittnye McSparron added one free throw with 10.6 seconds left. On the missed second free throw Brianna Mastey grabbed the ball and the Stars ran out the clock.

As a side note both regular coaches were gone. Leading the Stars was Tim Hested, and leading the Suns was Peter Long.

Sunday Minnesota Seeding Tourney Results

#3 posting 4.27.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

MINNESOTA SEEDING TOURNAMENT RESULTS
Today featured championships at various age brackets in the Minnesota Seeding tournament. The action at Kennedy featured titles for 19s, Jr. Eligible, 15s, and 14s. The level of play today was at a more intense level than yesterday.
At the 14 year old level, Erica Haugen's Fury team beat the Midtown Lady Monarchs 36-27. The Fury led by one at half 16-15, and held the Monarchs to 12 second half points. The Fury closed out with a 13-6 run the last seven minutes of the game. Tori Rule (DeLaSalle) had 8 for the Monarchs.
In full disclosure Erica Haugen once upon a time was one of my players at Osseo.

In the 15s it was North Tartan beating Metro Stars 61-48. MS led at half 33-30 after trailing 19-9 early in the first half. They took the lead on a buzzer beater at mid court by Ellen Edison (Maple Grove).
In the second half NT went on an 11-2 run keyed by 9 points by Kayla Hirt (Bemidji). She had 23 for the game. At the end of the year I said five minutes from now people will be talking about Hirt. Now they are.

Unfortunately the championship of the 16s or Junior Eligible game was at 4:45. I say unfortunately because due to the start time and the start time of the Miss Basketball banquet, which I am a committee member for, I had to miss what was due to be a classic. I was torn up about that.
Fortunately I have a reliable source to get my information.
In the third place game Metro Stars White beat Fury 50-40. Bridget Schueneman was a key component on the inside in the win. Lauren Wittman (Eden Prairie) and Kyanna Johnson (St. Paul Central) also were effective for MSW.
In the championship it was NC Heat over the MN Stars Borowicz 52-50. At halftime it was 25-22 for NCH. The Stars trailed until the last few minutes before they tied it up at 48. NCH took the lead at 50-48 with under a minute. Theairra Taylor stole the ball and tied the game at 50 on a steal and lay up. Tayler Hill caught the defense leaning the wrong way and drove in for a smooth lay up at the buzzer.
Theairra Taylor and Brittany Chambers hit critical 3s.
The game featured three players 6-4 or bigger--for NCH Anne Berner , and Cassie Rochel and Amber Dvorak for the Stars.
The intensity in the lane was state championship caliber.

Minnesota Seeding Tournament: Day 2

#2 posting 4.26.2008
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

MN SEEDING TOURNAMENT: day 2

Today the pool play wrapped up and moved to quarterfinal action. Coach Teas & I watched a pair of games at both the 15 year old and 16 year old brackets. With quarterfinal action the contests were not that close. Upsets were few and far between. The biggest upset came when Metro Stars White turned the tables on Metro Stars Black in civil war game part II 51-32. Two weeks ago MSB beat the Whites at the 43 Hoops tournament. I unfortunately was not at that game. After game three I had to eat due to diabetes and when I got back to the courts the Civil War game II had already started. I finished up with the Fury 50-44 win over the Suns.

One factor with spring ball is the battle for players. Not every team was at full strength. MN Stars Borowicz was missing the Jordan players Brittany Chambers and Leah Dietel due to prom. MN Stars Eckmann was also missing a few. One, Malinda Scherf of Norman County West, was stuck at home due to the snow (that's right folks) snow storm that blanketed western Minnesota. NC Heat had players gone due to prom. MN Stars Carlisle had a few players miss due to religious events. I am sure there were more MIA players.

Here are the reports

Game 1: Metro Stars 15s beat 43 Hoops 56-29. The halftime score was 39-14. MS15 controlled the board and moved the ball on offense in the win.

Game 2: North Tartan 15 beat MN Stars Carlisle 66-46. NT15 used the three ball seven times in the first half (Sari Noga dropped 5) as they built a 37-23 lead. Noga added one more in the second half.

Intermission: We then migrated back to court one where the Monarchs edged the Fury 51-50 in the best contest of the day. Tori Rule hit the game winner on a drive in the lane with 16 seconds to go.

Game 3: In the MN Stars civil war game it was MN Stars Borowicz beating MN Stars Eckmann 66-38. There was a household civil war too (in a manner of speaking) as Coach Eckmann's daughter Rachelle played for MS Borowicz. MSB had a slow start but picked up momentum by half time with a 38-17 lead. MSB won their civil war battle 66-38.

Game 4: I saw another MN Stars team this time Smith vs NC Heat. Despite missing a few players with prom NCH topped MSS 75-45.

I will be doing Out & Abouts on these games next week--I hope on gbbrecruit, once they unfreeze my posting ability.

Next up: tomorrow morning.

Friday's Minnesota Seeding Tourney Results

#3 posting 4.25.2008 (Yes I know it is Saturday)
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

MN SEEDING TOURNAMENT
Tonight was pool play in the Minnesota State Seeding tournament. The results of this weekend will go be used to place teams in the next tournament in two weeks. It was the first time this season that most of the power teams were in attendance at one event.

Coach Teas & I watched a 16/19 match up followed by 15s followed by another 16 event.
In game one it was almost like it was last week as the Minnesota Stars 19s faced the Minnesota Suns. The Stars 19s were made up primarily of players that were (or could have been) in the all star game last weekend. It was 35-26 at half time. The older team led at one point early in the first half 37-26 before the Suns started their rise. The Suns went on a 21-10 run to tie it at 47 all. After tying the game up neither team scored for 12 straight combined possessions. There were four more ties up to 58 all with under one minute to go. Pamela January tied it for the Suns. On the next Stars possession Kiara Allums scored on a drive with what proved to be the game winner. The Suns turned it over on their last trip down the court. Brittnye McSparron was fouled with 10.6 seconds left and made the first. Brianna Mastey got the key rebound and the 19s milked the clock to get the 61-58 victory.

Game two featured the 15s and the energy level was ramped up. In the previous game the Stars had only five players available at the start due to the lousy weather and congestion on the freeways. Both the Suns 15 Arbogast and Stars 15s Carlisle were hungry for a win. The Stars led at the largest point 18-11. The Suns was able to tie it at 26 at half on a three by Steph Davison. That tie would be replicated Four times in the second half, the last time at 42 on a Mariah Clarin 3. The Suns scored their last four possessions, all at the line, to wrap up a 50-42 win.

The Final match up of the night featured an early look at the 2009 All Stars with NC Heat jumping out to a 14-0 lead over 43 Hoops Johnson. Tayler Hill, Megan Nipe and crew used their defensive pressure to get steals and lay ups as they won 72-37.

I will get the out & abouts up on this or the original site-depending if I am still blocked.

you can look at gbbrecruit for the links.

The Week That Was #4: All Stars

#2 posting 4.25.2008 (I know it is Saturday)
your daily dose of girls basketball news & information

THE WEEK THAT WAS #4: ALL STARS
The All Star game again showed that teamwork is essential in winning games. Too often the five best players don't make the best team. That may have factored in to the outcome. 2A looked for each other, shared the ball, and hustled. It didn't hurt they had a solid height advantage over every team. They also had expert long range shooters.

How did 2A compare to the last two winners in 2007 and 2006? In a word better.
Year, Winner, points, possessions, pp100, floor %
08 2A 185, 167, 110.8, .521
07 4A 185, 185, 100.0, .481
06 4A 135, 154, 87.6, .422
They are better on the defensive end too.
08 2A 130, 167, 77.8, .395
07 4A 163, 188, 86.7, .398
06 4A 123, 153, 80.4, .373
I will go out on a limb and say 2A is the best All star team in the time I have charted these events. The numbers point that direction.

Right now all the teams in the AAU/Off season ball are "All Stars" in the sense they are thrown together. I prefer the term "multi-school." One advantage the AAU teams have is they can practice longer than 2 hours before their first contest, but practice is more limited than it is in the high school season. That is one reason you see lower pp100 in summer than in the winter.
The AAU teams that have the most success are the ones that play together as a team and are not just a collection of individuals.

The key key key (not a typo) ingredient, and the one I continually emphasized when I was coaching AAU, is "what have you done to make your team mates look better?"

TEAM OF THE WEEK
That is an easy call----2A for the reason mentioned above. In both games their pp100 was over 100. They also were at .521 on floor % for the weekend.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
This goes to Brianna Mastey who did a lot of the heavy lifting on 3A. She is athletic, runs the floor and finishes. Her scoring didn't venture far from the lane, but she does have 3 ability. She is also effective on defense. She had 37 points for the weekend, the most of any player, and besides that she had a pp100 of 154.2 and floor % of .792 which were also the highest around.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK
Jackie Voigt of the 4A gets the call. She had 10 d stops in the game against 1A and added six in the game against 2A. She boarded strongly in both contests.

DEFENSIVE TEAM
Kiara Allums, 4A, Centennial
Angie Jetvig, 2A, Hawley
Brianna Mastey, 3A, Becker

Jackie Voigt, 4A, Park-Cottage Grove

I AM BACK
No, I am not dead, or sick, or moved.
I have been blocked from posting on gbbrecruit by "robots" thinking I am doing evil things.

I will continue to post unvarnished truths about the world of girls basketball and recruiting.

I don't know why this happened. It all may be a silly misunderstanding. What will be happening, sooner rather than later, is for me to start my own website to avoid these hassles.

I have two days worth of postings to get up. My other blog....gbbrecruit....might be operational again in a few days. Until that time I will use this site.

Next up: Fridays first posting (I know it is Saturday).
